2007 WSU Mom of the Year, Evelyn Sacchi

Doctoral student Raymond Sacchi and his mother, Evelyn, 2007 WSU Mom of the Year.
Washington State University presented the 2007 Mom of the Year Award to Evelyn Sacchi during the annual Mom’s Weekend Brunch in April. A resident of Spokane, Sacchi was nominated by her son, Raymond, a doctoral student at WSU who described his mother as encouraging and humble, “which is precisely why I believe she deserves to be nominated. The best people in the world never recognize their own sacrifice or just how special they are to those around them,” Raymond said.
Sacchi, who could not attend the ceremony due to illness, worked as a nurse before becoming a caseworker in the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services. In his letter nominating his mother for the award, Raymond described how she grew up as a foster child and became a nurse because she wanted to earn her living by helping others, especially young children.
Evelyn Sacchi, who is currently undergoing treatment for terminal breast cancer, had to overcome the death of her daughter, a vocal music major student at WSU, in 2003, Raymond said. After the car accident, her son said she “pushed aside the pain she felt for the loss of her child” and encouraged him to continue his graduate work at WSU. “She has always instilled a love of learning and an emphasis on education.”
The Mom of the Year nomination is a process that allows students to acknowledge the impact their mothers make on their lives, to honor their personal achievements, and to recognize the diverse contributions these women bring to their communities. This program is coordinated by the Mom’s Weekend Committee.
